Remember this in the best and worst of times

I find it comforting when the same life-lessons emerge repeatedly over time. That moment when things fall into place is comforting and reassuring, even if the learning has come about from something inherently painful.

Sure, on occasion it can mean that I’ve repeated a mistake that I made before, or that the same lesson has emerged in a slightly different setting than it had previously.

It amounts to the same thing though — a slightly clearer understanding of how life works.

One such lesson is the sentiment in the title of this essay, attributed in various forms to many different people over time. It’s a reminder that no matter how good or bad a situation or experience may be, there’s no way that it’ll last forever.

It’s comforting when riding out a bad spell of course, but when things are positive, it can be hard to remember or believe that this too shall pass whether we want it to or not. It’s in the ending of some good times that I’ve recently been reminded of the fact.

Ride the wave as long as you can
