Why Are the Rules of Money So Different for Businesses Compared With Private Citizens?

Is it right or fair? Does it even make sense?

As I waited for my morning coffee to brew this morning, I took an idle glance at the stocks app on my phone.

Flicking past the charts and down to the news headlines, two stories sat one beneath the other in my feed, ironically demonstrating one of the great inequities of the modern world. They illustrated, in two headlines how we as private citizens are expected to live under a different set of financial rules than businesses have to conform with.

Here’s what I saw in that moment:

First, there’s a piece by the BBC suggesting that in spite of the recent (alleged) drop in the rate of inflation, over 7 million Brits are struggling to make financial ends meet. It references a heightened dependence on food banks and reports instances of elderly people who claim to be buying and consuming dog food as it’s cheaper than food intended for humans.

Immediately beneath that, a story from the Daily Telegraph describing how one of the leading chains of pubs in the UK is…
